The vagina is a magical entity, one worthy of the utmost respect and that includes proper hygiene and care. There are crazy trends out there, but the truth is vaginal health is simple and it’s actual pretty easy to clean your vagina.

Love thy (good) bacteria.

It’s important to remember that there’s such a thing as good bacteria that lives in your vagina (lactobacilli). This ensures that the vagina stays acidic, with a balanced pH (the normal vaginal pH is about 3.8 to 4.5), and healthy enough to fend off infections. You don’t want to do subject your vagina to intense “cleaning” methods because they can mess with this delicate ecosystem.

The vagina self-cleans.

Plus, the inside of the vagina is like a self-cleaning oven. The secretion of small amounts of discharge are the vagina’s method for keeping itself clean (out with the old/unnecessary). This action helps maintain that normal vaginal pH, but doesn’t do everything to guard against all issues and it’s very common to experience itching, odors, and the like. That’s because many every day activities can also throw off your pH like menstruation and sex.

Keep it simple.

When you do clean your vagina, keep it simple. Stay away from using exfoliants and scented soaps down there, as they can irritate the skin. Rinse with warm water, that’s it! If you just can’t go soap-free, stick with something super simple, using a wash cloth or your hand to gently clean the area. For the vulva (the external genitals), you can use soap, but again – keep it simple; nothing harsh.

Pick the right products.

If you’re going to use vaginal cleaning products, be sure to do your research and find the right ones, those designed specifically with your comfort, health, and safety in mind. Summer’s Eve has an impressive line of gentle products to keep you fresh, clean, and maintain a natural vaginal pH. That’s why we included samples of their Simply Summer’s Eve Cleansing Cloths in our Monthly Gift boxes for the summer months.
