How Shine Theory Makes Us All Stronger
Shine Theory is the belief that when women support each other, everyone shines brighter. Strong women (and all women) can build each other up, and should avoid tearing each other down. As women, we need all the support we can get.
Ann Freidman, of the acclaimed and awesome podcast Call Your Girlfriend, first wrote about her Shine Theory in 2013 in a piece for New York Magazine in which she described her best friend telling her, “I don’t shine if you don’t shine.”
Here are a few reasons why Shine Theory works:
It makes you look better.
From a potentially shallow point of view, being in the presence of powerful, successful women brings reminds you that you are on the same level. Although stereotypes are something we don’t like to embrace, there are cases where you will be judged by the people you’re around. Surround yourself with the strongest, and you will make one hell of a girl gang that will make men in suits shiver in their loafers.
You can learn. A lot.
Does your friend speak three languages and you want to make an impression on that potential new French client? Or maybe has an MBA and you’re thinking of making a career change? Ask for help! Maybe even trade some knowledge while you’re at it: the I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine concept for empowering, intelligent women.
You’re constantly pushing each other.
A little extra motivation never hurt anyone. And a promotion for a friend should excite you as well! Of course, you’ll be excited for your friend’s success first. But this also means her expanded network is an expanded network for you. Build from each other.
Confidence is contagious.
Just like negativity, positive and strong vibes are infectious. If you surround yourself with confident people, it will rub off on you. Guaranteed.
When you’re intimidated by another woman, ask yourself one simple question: Why?
As small as this may seem, it’s easy to get caught up in jealousy rather than get to the root of why you may be feeling this way. And figuring out why is the first step to self-improvement, if that’s what you want. Remember, you’re perfect just as you are.
We can conquer the world together!
Long live the powerful women of the world!Strong women (and all women) can build each other up, and should avoid tearing each other down. As women, we need all the support we can get.
