MG Asks: Is it Normal to Be Super Horny on Your Period?

While those tired taboos around period sex being gross sadly still exist, it’s absolutely normal and actually super common to be horny on your period.

Typically sexual desire in women peaks during ovulation (12-14 days before your period starts) – because, hormones. Specifically the surge in estrogen and testosterone that accompany ovulation. Evolutionarily, this makes sense, right? Our bodies are ready to be impregnated and we’re ready to get down and dirty.

But if ovulation is the peak, that doesn’t mean your interest in sex can’t also be piqued in 12-14 days when your period arrives. During your cycle, you experience fluctuations in your libido so being super horny on your period is totally normal. And you should totally embrace period sex.

The jury is still out as to exactly why your libido spikes while Aunt Flo is in town, but research has dug up and society has espoused some theories. Let’s explore a few theories from Go Ask Alice, the lovely team of health specialists at Columbia University:

  • During your period, the possibility of pregnancy is reduced (but not eliminated), which may make you feel more liberated and lusty during this time.
  • During your period, you can experience pelvic congestion (not great), lots heaviness downstairs, which can actually trigger arousal (great).
  • The additional lubrication during your period, while it can be off-putting to some (don’t buy this myth), can make penetration much more comfortable and sex, much more enjoyable.
  • Orgasms are great and they can relieve your discomfort, period cramps, and alleviate your general period related malaise.

Basically, it’s all good. And exploring your sexuality throughout your cycle can (and should) be a wonderful experience.
